Biographies:

Charles Elliott St. john Biographical Sketch

Charles Elliott St. john, clergyman, was born in Prairie du Chien, Wis., Dec. 19, 1856; son of Thomas Elliott and Henrietta (Knox) St. John. He attended the high school in Worcester, Mass.; was graduated from Harvard college, A.B., 1879, A.M., 1883, and from Harvard Divinity school, B.D., 1883; ordained to the Unitarian ministry in the latter year, and served as pastor of the Second Congregational church, Northampton, Mass., 1883?91. He was married, June 26, 1888, to Martha Elizabeth, daughter of George Draper and Martha (Plummer) Everett of Dover, Mass. He was pastor of the First Unitarian church, Pittsburg, Pa., 1891?1900, and in July, 1900, was appointed secretary of the American Unitarian association of Boston, Mass.

A Biography of Kirk Munroe

Kirk Munroe, author, was born near Prairie du Chien, Wis., Sept. 15, 1850; son of Charles and Susan (Hall) Munroe; grandson of Edmund and Sophia (Seawell) Monroe, and of Isaac and Susan (Mitchell) Hall, all of Boston, Mass., and a descendant of William Munroe of Lexington, Mass., 165t. There were fifteen Monroes in the battle of Lexington, and one of them fired the first shot. The first man killed was a Munroe. Kirk attended the public schools at Appleton, Wis., and Cambridge, Mass., and matriculated at Harvard, but did not graduate. He was married, Sept. 15, 1883, to Mary, daughter of Robert and Amelia Edith (Huddleston) Burr. He founded the League of American Wheelmen at Newport, R.I., May 31, 1880, and was for five years commodore of the New York Canoe club. He was the first editor of Harper's Round Table, 1879-82, and also edited "Eminent Men of our Time."
