Biographies:

John Henry Maccracken Biography

John Henry Maccracken, educator, was born in Rochester, Vt., Sept. 30, 1875; son of Henry Mitchell and Catherine (Hubbard) MacCracken and grandson of John and Eliza (Dougherty) MacCracken and of Thomas Swan and Mary (Fay) Hubbard. His paternal ancestor, Henry MacCracken, emigrated from the north of Ireland about 1760, settled in Pennsylvania and taught school on the west branch of the Susquehanna river. His maternal ancestor, John Hubbard, was pastor of the church at Northfield, Mass., 1749-94. He attended the public schools of Allegheny, Pa., and Lyons collegiate institute at New York city, and was graduated from New York university, A.B., 1894, A.M., 1897. He was a student at the Union Theological seminary, 1894-95, and at the University of Halle-Wittenberg, Germany, 1895-96 and 1899, receiving the degree of Ph.D. in 1899. He was instructor and assistant professor of philosophy at New York university, 1896-99, and was elected president of Westminster college in 1899, at the age of twenty-three. He was elected a member of the Western Philosophical association in 1899 and of the American Historical association in 1900.
