Israel Otis Dewey Biography

Israel Otis Dewey, soldier, was born in Berlin, Vt., March 9, 1824; son of Israel and Nancy (Hovey) Dewey; grandson of William and Rebecca (Carrier) Dewey, and of Roger and Martha (Freeman) Hovey; and a direct descendant in the eighth generation from Thomas Dewey, a freeman of Dorchester, Mass., in 1634. His mother was seventh in descent from Daniel Hovey, who settled in Ipswich, Mass., in 1637. Israel Otis was fitted for college, but deciding on a mercantile life engaged in business in Concord. N.H., 1849-52, and in Hanover, 1852-64. He was an aide with the rank of colonel on the staff of Governor Haile, 1857, was a state legislator in 1860, postmaster of Hanover, 1861-64, additional paymaster of volunteers, 1864-66, and paymaster in the U.S. army with rank of major, 1867-88, serving the last three years in the office of the paymaster-general at Washington. He was retired in 1888, on reaching the age limit. He was married in 1851 to Susan Augusta, daughter of Gen. Henry and Susan (West) Sweetser. He died in Boston, Mass., May 12, 1888.
