Biographies:

A Short Biography of Andrew Napoleon Adams

Andrew Napoleon Adams, educator, was born in Fair Haven, Vt., January 6, 1830; son of Joseph and Stella (Miller) Adams, and great-grandson of James Adams, a native of Ulster, Ireland, who settled in Londonderry, N.H., in 1721. He studied at Green Mountain institute, 1847-48; Meadville theological school, 1850-52; and was graduated at Harvard divinity school in 1855, He was pastor of the First Congregational society, Needham, Mass., 1855-57; and of the First Universalist church, Franklin, Mass., 1857-60; and a merchant, manufacturer, farmer, bank director and school trustee at Fair Haven, Vt., after 1860. He organized the Fair Haven public library and the graded school, and assisted in instituting the Rutland county historical society. He was a trustee of the State normal school from 1869, and president of the board from 1882. He was a state representative in 1884 and a state senator in 1888. He was married Aug. 1, 1855, to Angie M., daughter of Erastus and Margaret (Hibbard) Phelps. He became a member of the N.E. historic, genealogical society in 1896. He is the author of: "History of Fair Haven" (1870); "Genealogy of the Adams Family" (1898).

The Biography of Chittenden Lyon

Chittenden Lyon, representative, as born in Fair Haven, Vt., in 1786; son of the Hon. Matthew and Beulah (Chittenden) Galusha Lyon, and grandson of Gov. Thomas and Elizabeth (Meigs) Chittenden. In 1801 he removed with his father to Eddyville, Ky. He was a representative in the Kentucky legislature; a state senator; a Jacksonian Democratic representative in the 20th, 21st, 22d and 23d congresses, 1827-35, and an unsuccessful candidate for presidential elector on the Van Buren and Johnson ticket in 1836. His wife died Feb. 4, 1828, leaving five children, and their daughter, Margaret A., became the wife of Willis B. Machen . Lyon county, Ky., of which Eddyville is the capital, was named in his honor. He died in Caldwell county, Ky., Nov. 23, 1842.
