Biographies:

Charles Clinton Ellsworth - A Biography

Charles Clinton Ellsworth, representative, was born in Berkshire, Vt., Jan. 29, 1824; son of Dr. William C. and Bethania (Johnson) Ellsworth. He was admitted to the bar and practised law in Michigan. He was appointed by Governor Batty prosecuting attorney of Livingston county, Mich., in 1850, and in 1851 removed to Greenville, Montcalm ccunty. He was a member of the state legislature in 1852 and 1854 and was prosecuting attorney of Montcalm county, 1854-56. In 1862 he was appointed by President Lincoln a paymaster in the Union army, and served until the close of the war. In 1876 he was elected a Republican representative in the 45th congress.

A Biography of George Edmund Foss

George Edmund Foss, representative, was born in Berkshire Vt. July 2, 1863; son of George E. and Marcia (Noble) Foss. He was graduated from Harvard in 1885, and entered the Columbia law school and the School of political science in New York city. He was graduated from the Union college of law, Chicago, in 1889, and was admitted to the bar, practising in Chicago, Ill. He was a Republican representative from the 7th Illinois district in the 54th, 58th congresses, 1895-1905.

BERKSHIRE, a post-township of Franklin county, Vermont, about 50 miles N. by E. from Montpelier, on the N. side of Missisque river, has very great water privileges. Population, 1955.
