Barston, governor of Vermont, was born in Shelburne, Vt., Feb. 21, 1832; son of Heman and Lorain (Lyon) Barston. He engaged in business in Detroit, Mich.; returned to Shelburne, Vt., in 1857, and followed agricultural pursuits, until 1861, when he entered the Union army and attained the rank of major in a Vermont regiment. He was brigadier-general of state troops during the St. Albans raid 1864-'65; representative in the state legislature, 1864-'65; a state senator, 1866-'68 and U.S. pension agent at Burlington, 1870-'78. He was lieutenant-governor, 1880-'82; and governor of Vermont, 1882-'84. The Biography of Lucius Lyon Lucius Lyon, senator, was born in Shelburne, Vt., Feb. 26, 1800. In 1822 he removed to Bronson, Michigan Territory, where he engaged as surveyor-general of the Northwest Territory. He was territorial delegate to congress, 1833-35; a delegate from the eleventh district to the state constitutional convention of 1835; U.S. senator from Michigan for the short term, 1835-39; removed to Grand Rapids, and was a Democratic representative from the 5th congressional district in the 28th congress, 1843-45. He was a regent of the University of Michigan by appointment, 1837-39, and by re-appointment, Feb. 27, 1839, for a term of four years, but resigned in 1839. He died in Grand Rapids, Mich., Sept. 24, 1851. |
