Horace Chilton Biographical Sketch

Horace Chilton, senator, was born in Smith county, Texas, Dec. 29, 1853; son of a Confederate soldier killed in battle during the civil war. He entered a printer's office, worked himself up to the case, and later started a newspaper; from its proceeds, and his earnings as a type-setter, he supported his mother and gave his sister an education. While editing his paper he studied law, and was admitted to practice. He was appointed assistant attorney-general of the state in 1881 by Governor Roberts, and was a delegate-at-large to the national Democratic convention at St. Louis in 1888. He was appointed to the U.S. senate in 1891 to fill a vacancy, but failed of election when the legislature convened. He was elected to the U.S. senate, serving, 1895-1901, and then resumed practice.
