He was. graduated at Amherst A.B., 1867, A.M. 1870, was admitted to the bar in 1869 and was professor of logic, rhetoric and English literature in Knox college 1869-71. He studied at G?ttingen, Leipzig and Berlin 1871-73, was professor of history and political science at Amherst 1873-76, and of history, political science and international law at Columbia college from 1876, which chair was changed to that of history, political science and constitutional law in 1890. He was also professor of constitutional and international history and law in the school of political science, Columbia college. He received the degree Ph.D. from the college of New Jersey in 1883, and LL.D. in 1884; became a trustee of Columbia and in 1890 a member of the University council and dean of the faculty of political science. He is the author of The Middle Period (1898) in American History Series; The Civil War and the Constitution (1901); Reconstruction and the Constitution (1902). |
