Contact Us! 15% - 35% off all Products ยป The Ready Store Biographies:A Short Biography of Milledge L. Bonham Milledge L. Bonham, governor of South Carolina, was born in Edgefield county, S. C., May 6, 1815. In 1834 he was graduated from the University of South Carolina, and three years later was admitted to the Columbia bar. He began practice in Edgefield county. He served as commander of a South Carolina battalion during the war with Mexico, and in 1848 was made state solicitor for the southern circuit, holding the office two years. In 1856 he was elected a representative to the 35th Congress, and reelected in 1858, serving until the withdrawal of the South Carolina delegation in 1860. He served in the Confederate army as brigadier-general at Blackburn's Ford and Manassas, and was a representative in the Confederate congress. In 1862 he was elected governor of South Carolina, holding the office two years, when he returned to the army, serving until the surrender. He then resumed his practice at Edgefield C. H., and took no active part in politics. He died at White Sulphur Springs, Va., Aug. 28, 1890. Local History and Genealogy Links: |
