Frederick Haynes Newell, hydrographer, was born in Bradford, Pa., March 5, 1862; son of Augustus William and Annie M. (Haynes) Newell; grandson of Artemas Newell, a noted horticulturist of Needham, Mass., and a descendant in the ninth generation from Abraham Newell, who came from Ipswich, England, in 1634, and died in Roxbury, Mass., in 1672. He attended the public schools at Needham, and the high school at Newton, Mass.; engaged in mining in Colorado, 1882, and was graduated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, M.E., in 1885. He was an assistant on the Ohio geological survey, 1885, and in mining and civil engineering in Pennsylvania and Virginia, 1886-87. In 1888 he was appointed hydrographer of the U.S. geological survey under Major Powell, and was made chief of the division of hydrography in 1890. He was married, April 3, 1890, to Effie Josephine, daughter of John Sherman Mackintosh, a descendant of Roger Sherman of Connecticut. He was secretary of the National Geographic society, 1892-93, and 1897-99, and secretary of the American Forestry association from 1895. He was elected a member of the Washington Academy of Sciences; fellow of the Geological Society of America, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He is the author of: Hydrography of the Arid Regions of the United States (1891); Agriculture by Irrigation (1894); The Public Lands of the United States (1895); Irrigation in the United States (1902); the annual reports of the U.S. division of hydro-graphy, a series of pamphlets entitled, Water Supply, Irrigation Papers, and is a writer on geographic, economic and engineering subjects in current magazines.
