He joined the American forces on his arrival in Philadelphia, and served as physician and surgeon throughout the Revolution. He was secretary of the American Philosophical society for several years; was professor of materia medica in the medical department of the University of the State of Pennsylvania, 1789-91, and professor of chemistry in the medical department of the newly chartered University of Pennsylvania, 1791-93. He served as trustee of the University of the State of Pennsylvania, 1779-81. He held the official office of physician of the port of Philadelphia and as physician to the Philadelphia hospital.
