Thomas Ford - A Biography

Thomas Ford, governor of Illinois, was born at Uniontown, Pa., Dec. 5, 1800; son of Robert Ford. His father was killed by the Indians, and the son was taken at an early age by his widowed mother, first to the territory west of the Mississippi river, and subsequently to Monroe county, Ill., where he studied law and was admitted to the bar. He was judge of the circuit court and later a judge of the supreme court, from which latter office he was elected governor of Illinois, serving 1842-46. As governor he saved the financial honor of the state by opposing the proposed repudiation of the state debt of over fifteen million dollars wasted by former administrations in useless internal improvements and wild-cat banking schemes. He published: History of Illinois from 1818 to 1847 (1854). In 1896 the state erected over his grave a suitable monument. He died in Peoria, Ill., Nov. 3, 1850.
