Contact Us! 15% - 35% off all Products ยป The Ready Store Biographies:Biographical Sketch of Samuel John Mills Eaton Samuel John Mills Eaton, clergyman, was born in Fairview, Pa., April 15, 1820; son of the Rev. Johnston and Eliza (Canon) Eaton. He was graduated from Jefferson college in 1845 and from the Western theological seminary in 1848, and was licensed to preach, March 16, 1848, by the presbytery of Erie. He was pastor at Mt. Pleasant, Pa., 1848-55; at Franklin, Pa., 1848-82, and in 1871 travelled in Europe, Egypt, Palestine and Greece. In 1879 he was chosen a trustee of Washington and Jefferson college, and in 1880 became a director of Western theological seminary. He was married, Nov. 5, 1850, to Clara T., daughter of John W. Howe, a representative from Pennsylvania in the 31st and 32d congresses. He received the degree of D.D. from Washington and Jefferson college in 1869. He published: Petroleum (1866); History of the Presbytery of Erie (1868); History of Venango County, Pa. (1876); Lakeside (1880); Memorial of Cyrus Dickson, D.D. (1883); Jerusalem (1884); Palestine (1885); and Memorial of Robert Lamberton (1886). He died at Franklin, Pa., July 16, 1889. Gabriel Hiester Biography Gabriel Hiester, jurist, was born in Bern township, Berks county, Pa., Jan. 5, 1779; son of the Hon. Gabriel and Elizabeth (Bansman) Hiester; and grandson of Daniel and Catharine (Schuler) Hiestet. He received a good English and German education. He was married May 12, 1803, to Mary, daughter of John Otto, of Reading, Pa. He was prothonotary of the court by appointment of the governor, 1809-17; clerk of the quarter sessions, 1809-19 and 1814-17; and associate judge, 1819-23. During the war of 1812-15 be served as brigade major under Gen. William Adams. He was a presidential elector in 1817 and 1821, casting his vote on both occasions for James Monroe. He was appointed by Governor Andrew Shultz surveyor-general of the state, May 11, 1824. He erected the first rolling-mill in the vicinity of Fairview, about 1833. He died at Fairview, Pa., Sept. 14, 1834. |
