Biographies:

A Short Biography of Joseph Silas Diller

Joseph Silas Diller, geologist, was born in Plainfield, Pa., Aug. 27, 1850; son of Samuel and Catharine (Bear) Diller. In 1873 he became a teacher in the Massachusetts normal school at Westfield, remaining there until 1875. He then entered Lawrence scientific school of Harvard and received his B.S. degree in 1879. He accompanied the Assos expedition in the capacity of geologist, 1881-83, and in the latter year was appointed assistant geologist on the U.S. geological survey. He is the author of Notes on the Geology of the Troad (1883); Diamonds in the United States (1886); Notes on the Geology of Northern California (1886); Peridotite of Elliott County, Kentucky, (1887); Sandstone Dikes (1890); A Late Volcanic Eruption in Northern California and its Peculiar Lava (1891); Mica-Peridotite from Kentucky (1892); Geology of the Taylorville Region of California (1892); Cretaceous and Early Tertiary of Northern California and Oregon (1893); Mount Shasta, A Typical Volcano (1895); Tertiary Revolution in the Topography of the Pacific Coast (1895); A Geological Reconnaissance in Northwestern Oregon (1896); Crater Lake, Oregon (1897).
