Biographies:

Samuel Hawkins Marshall Byers Biographical Sketch

Samuel Hawkins Marshall Byers, author, was born in Pulaski, Pa., July 23, 1838, son of James M. Byers. He was educated in the public schools of Oskaloosa, Iowa; studied law, and in 1861 enlisted as a private. He was imprisoned at Columbia, S. C., after the battle of Chattanooga, and there wrote Sherman's March to the Sea. He escaped and was attached to Sherman's staff. He became adjutant of the 5th Iowa volunteers in 1863, and was brevetted major in 1865. He was U. S. consul at Zurich 1869-84; consul-general in Italy, 1885, and in Switzerland 1891-93. He is the author of: "The Happy Isles" (poems 1885); Switzerland and the Swiss (1886); Sixteen Months in a Rebel Prison, a Diary (1886); Iowa in War Times (1888); The March to the Sea (1897); Recollections of a Consul (1899).
