James Allison, a member of the 18th Congress. He studied law, but never practised; was a member of the Pennsylvania assembly 1846-47 and in 1849, and was elected a representative in the 32d and 34th congresses as a Whig, serving 1851-53, and 1855-57. He declined a third term; was appointed registrar of the U.S. treasury, April 1, 1869, and held that office until his death at Washington, D.C., March 23, 1873. A Short Biography of Oliver James Dickey Oliver James Dickey, representative, was born in Old Brighton, Beaver county, Pa., April 6, 1823; son of John and Elvira W. (Adams) Dickey, and grandson of John Dickey. He matriculated at Dickinson college but left at the close of his freshman year and studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1846 and practised in Lancaster, Pa. He was district attorney for Lancaster county, 1856-59, and was a Republican representative in the 40th, 41st and 42d congresses, 1867-73. Thomas J. Kennedy Biography Thomas J. Kennedy, educator, was born in Beaver county, Pa., Feb. 1, 1832. He attended Hookstown academy; taught the district school and was graduated at Franklin college, New Athens, Ohio, in 1852. He was principal of Hookstown academy, 1852-54. He was graduated at the Theological seminary, Xenia, Ohio, in 1858, and on June 15 of that year was licensed to preach by the United Presbytery of Chartiers. He was pastor at Jamestown, Pa., 1858-66; Fredericksburg, Ohio, 1866-70; Steubenville, 1870-73; general agent of Westminster college, 1873-75; principal of Beaver Ladies' seminary, Pa., 1875-78; pastor at Des Moines, Iowa, 1878-83; president of Amity college, College Springs, Iowa, 1883-92, and again, 1894-96. He was married, May 21, 1837, to Martha, daughter of Judge Samuel and Rachel (Jackson) Kyle, of Cedarville, Ohio. He received the honorary degree of D.D. from Westminster college in 1877, and in 1888 was elected foundation fellow of the Society of Science, Letters and Art, London, England.
