Biographies:

Helen Ekin Starrett - A Biography

Helen Ekin Starrett, author, was born in Allegheny county, Pa., Sept. 19, 1840; daughter of the Rev. John and Esther Fell (Lee) Ekin; granddaughter of Silas and Rebecca (Fell) Lee of Bucks county, Pa., and of William and Martha (Cowan) Ekin of Westmoreland county, Pa., and a descendant of the Fell family of Longlands, England. She was graduated from the Pittsburg, Pa., high school in 1856, and was married, Feb. 15, 1864, to the Rev. William Aikin Starrett, son of William and Ellen (McEwen) Starrett of A1?legheny county, Pa. She was the founder of the Kenwood institute, a classical school for girls in Chicago, Ill., 1885, and principal of the same from its foundation for nine years. She then founded a school of her own, incorporated as the Starrett School for Girls. She is the author of: Future of Educated Women (1880); Letters to a Daughter (1882); Letters to Elder Daughters (1883); Gyppie, an Obituary (1884); Pete, the Story of a Chicken (1885); Letters to a Little Girl (1886); After College, What For Girls? (1895), and with her sister, Frances Ekin Allison, author of a volume of poems entitled Crocus and Wintergreen (1893). She also contributed to magazines and to religious and educational journals both as editorial and miscellaneous writer. Her home in 1903 was in Chicago, Ill.

A Biography of Elijah Hise

Elijah Hise, representative, was born in Allegheny county, Pa., in 1801. His parents, who were of German descent, removed to Kentucky and settled in Russellville, Logan county, where Elijah was educated and became a member of the bar. He was a supporter of Jackson and was defeated as a candidate for representative in the state legislature in 1828, but was elected in 1829. He was a judge of the court of appeals by appointment and subsequently by election. He was appointed charg? d'affaires to Guatemala in 1848, authorized to negotiate with San Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica: a presidential elector in 1856, and a representative in the 39th congress, 1866-67, to fill the unexpired term of Henry Grider, who died, Sept. 14, 1866. He was re-elected to the 40th congress, but died by his own hand at Russellville, Ky., May 8, 1867.

A Short Biography of William Neill

William Neill, educator, was born in Allegheny county, Pa., in 1778. His parents were massacred by the Indians when he was a child, and he was adopted in his sister's family: He attended Jefferson academy, Canonsburg, Pa.; was graduated at the College of New Jersey, A.B., 1803, A.M., 1806; remained there as a student of theology and was a tutor, 1803-05; was licensed by the presbytery of New Brunswick in October, 1805, and ordained by the presbytery of Oneida in September, 1806: He was pastor at Cooperstown, N.Y., 1805-09; of the First church, Albany, N.Y., 1809-16; of the Sixth church, Philadelphia, Pa., 1816-24, and was moderator of the General Assembly in 1815. He was the sixth president of Dickenson College, Carlisle, P.A., 1824-1829; secretary and general agent of the Presbyterian board of education, 1829-31, and pastor at Germantown, Pa., 1831-42. He resided in Philadelphia, Pa., 1842-60, where he devoted himself to literary and city missionary work. He received the degree D.D. from Union college, N.Y., in 1812. He edited the Presbyterian for several years, contributed to other religious periodicals and is the author of: Lectures on Biblical History (1846); Exposition of the Epistle to the Ephesians (1850); Divine Origin of the Christian Religion (1854), and Ministry of Fifty Years with Anecdotes cad Reminiscences (1857). He died in Philadelphia, Pa., Aug. 8, 1860.
