Vernon, Ohio, May 25, 1819; son of Elie and Eleanor G. (Krepps) Miller; and grandson of Jonathan and Mary (Kickman) Miller and of John and Mary (Gillespie) Krepps, all of Brownville, Pa. He matriculated at Kenyon college, Gambier, Ohio, with the class of 1839, but transferred to Jefferson college, Canonsburg, Pa., where he was graduated in 1888. He was admitted to the bar in 1841, practised at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, 1641-63, and was prosecuting attorney for Knox county, 1841-45. He was married at Wooster, Ohio, May 6, 1845, to Elizabeth Christmas, daughter of William and Susan C. Larwill of Wooster, Ohio; their only child, Virginia Larwill, married, Dec. 20, 1870, Gen., Charles Ewing . Mr. Miller was a Democratic representative from the eleventh Ohio district in the 30th and 81st congresses, 1647-51; a member of the Democratic national convention of 1844, and in 1853 declined the chief justiceship of Washington Territory. He died at Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Aug. 11, 1863. Biographical Sketch of Franklin Benjamin Gault Franklin Benjamin Gault, educator, was born in Wooster, Ohio, May 2, 1851; son of Joseph and Caroline (Finn) Gault, and grandson of John Gault. He was graduated from Cornell college, Mr. Vernon, Iowa, B.S., 1877, M.S., 1880, and A.M., 1897, and was superintendent of schools at Tama, Iowa, 1877-81; at Mason city, Iowa, 1881-83, and at Pueblo, Cal., 1883-88. He organized the public schools at Tacoma, Wash., 1888-92; was the organizer, teacher and president of the University of Idaho, 1892-98, and in 1899 accepted the presidency of Whitworth college, Tacoma, an endowed college, newly relocated, reorganized and revivified. He was a member of the Washington state board of education, 1891-92; chairman, ex officio, of the Idaho free text-book commission, 1893, and president of the Idaho state teachers' association, 1893. He was first director of the National educational association for the state of Washington, and also for Idaho. He was elected a member of the American association for the advancement of science and of other leading educational and learned societies. The Biography of Addison Smith McClure Addison Smith McClure, representative, born born in Wooster, Ohio, Oct. 10, 1839; son of Charles and Lucetta McClure and grandson of Matthew McClure. He matriculated at Jefferson college, Canonsburg, Pa., but was not graduated. He studied law and practised in Wooster. During the civil war he served as sergeant-major of the 4th Ohio infantry and captain in the 16th Ohio infantry, 1861-64. He was a Republican representative from the eighteenth district of Ohio in the 47th, and from the seventeenth district in the 54th congresses, 1881-83 and 1895-97. He was a delegate to the Republican national conventions at Chicago, May 20, 1868, and at Cincinnati, June 14, 1876. Biographical Sketch of John Sloane John Sloane, representative, was born at York, Pa., in 1779. He removed to Ohio while it was still a territory; was a representative from Jefferson county in the 2d, 3d, 4th and 6th general assemblies, 1803?06 and 1807?08, and speaker, 1805 and 1806; colonel of militia in the war of 1812; receiver of public moneys at Canton, Ohio, 1808?16, and at Wooster, 1816?19, and was a representative from the sixth district of Ohio in the 16th and 17th and from the twelfth district in the 18th-20th congresses, serving, 1819?29. He was clerk of the court of common pleas for seven years; secretary of state, 1841?44, and treasurer of the United States from Nov. 27, 1850, to April l, 1853. He died at Wooster, Ohio, May 15, 1856. |
