Caldwell, representative, was born at Fair Haven, Preble county, Ohio, April 21, 1853; son of Alexander and Sarah Caldwell. His education was acquired in the common schools, and at the age of seventeen he began to teach school. In 1871 he went to Cincinnati, and, after teaching for three years in Mill Creek township, began the study of law. In 1876 he was graduated from the Cincinnati law school, and after teaching for another year he entered upon the practice of his profession. In 1881 he was elected prosecuting attorney for the city, and re-elected in 1883. In 1887 he was elected city judge, and in the succeeding year president of the Ohio Republican league. He was a representative in the 51st, 52nd and 53rd congresses. He was chairman of the Republican congressional committee in 1892. He resigned his seat in Congress to accept the mayoralty of Cincinnati, assuming this office May 4, 1894, for the term expiring June 30, 1897. He is the author of the anti-lottery bill. |
