Biographies:

A Short Biography of Daniel Mace

Daniel Mace, representative, was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, Sept. 5, 1811. He was brought up on a farm; removed to Indiana in 1832, studied law there, and settled in practice in Lafayette. He was a representative in the state legislature, 1836; clerk of the state house of representatives in 1837, and U.S. attorney for the district of Indiana during Polk's administration, 1849-53. He was a representative from Indiana in the 32d, 33d and 34th congresses, 1851-57, serving as chairman of the committee on post offices and post roads. He was originally a Democrat and joined the Republican party in 1854, and in 1861 was appointed postmaster of Lafayette by President Lincoln. He died by his own hand at Lafayette, Ind., July 26, 1867.
