He was brought up on a farm; removed to Indiana in 1832, studied law there, and settled in practice in Lafayette. He was a representative in the state legislature, 1836; clerk of the state house of representatives in 1837, and U.S. attorney for the district of Indiana during Polk's administration, 1849-53. He was a representative from Indiana in the 32d, 33d and 34th congresses, 1851-57, serving as chairman of the committee on post offices and post roads. He was originally a Democrat and joined the Republican party in 1854, and in 1861 was appointed postmaster of Lafayette by President Lincoln.
