He was graduated from Western Reserve university in 1859; studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1861. He entered the volunteer army as 2nd lieutenant in the 19th Ohio infantry, April 22, 1861, serving till Aug. 31, 1861, when be entered the regular army as a private in the 18th infantry Sept. 14, 1861, attaining the rank of 1st lieutenant, Nov. 25, 1862. He was brevetted captain, Dec. 31, 1862, for gallant and meritorious services in the battle of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; was promoted captain, Dec. 21, 1866; transferred to the 45th infantry, Jan. 22, 1867, and to the 14th infantry, July 22, 1869; was promoted major and assigned to the 4th infantry, March 1, 1894, and lieutenant-colonel of the 7th infantry, July 7, 1897. He served in the Spanish-American war at the battle of E1 Caney, July 1-2, 1898; was commissioned colonel in the regular service and brigadier-general of volunteers, Sept. 21, 1898, commanded the 18th infantry in the Philippines from June to December, 1899, when he was detached from service in the field and ordered home. He was retired Dec. 27, 1899, with the rank of brigadier-general in the regular army. |

Additional Local History Notes: The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows: MEDINA, a county in the N. N. E. part of Ohio, has an area of 420 square miles. It is drained by Rocky and Black rivers, and by Killbuck and Chippewa creeks, which rise within its limits. The surface is undulating, the soil a clayey and gravelly loam, adapted to pasturage. Indian corn, wheat, oats, hay, wool, and butter, are the staples. In 1850 this county produced 418,027 bushels of corn; 132,446 of wheat; 215,330 of oats; 37,571 tons of hay; 306,602 pounds of wool, and 613,853 of butter. It contained 42 churches, and 2 newspaper offices. There were 9915 pupils attending public schools, and 25 attending another school. Large quantities of mineral fire-proof paint are procured in the eastern part of the county, and exported to other states and to Europe. Capital, Medina. Population, 24,441. The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows: MEDINA, a thriving post-village, capital of Medina county, Ohio, is pleasantly situated in Medina township, on an eminence 112 miles N. E. from Columbus, and 28 miles S. W. from Cleveland. Medina contains several churches, and 2 newspaper offices. Population in 1850, 1008; in 1853, about 1400. Medina is situated 332 meters above sea level. |
