Biographies:

A Short Biography of William Fraser McDowell

William Fraser McDowell, educator, was born in Millersburg, Ohio, Feb. 4, 1858; son of David and Rebecca (Fraser) McDowell and grandson of Matthew McDowell and of William Fraser. He was graduated from the Ohio Wesleyan university, A.B., 1879, and from Boston University School of Theology, S.T.B., 1882; entered the North Ohio conference of the Methodist Episcopal church in 1882, and was stationed successively at Lodi, 1882-83; Oberlin, 1883-85, and Tiffin, 1885-90. He was chancellor of the University of Denver, Col., 1890-99, and a member of the Colorado state board of charities and corrections, 1895-99. He received the honorary degrees Ph.D. in 1893 and S.T.D. in 1894, from Ohio Wesleyan university. He was founder and first editor of Phi Gamma Delta Quarterly; was elected corresponding secretary of the Board of Education of the Methodist Episcopal church in May, 1899, and re-elected to the same office by the general conference of the Methodist Episcopal church in May, 1900.

The Biography of John K. Cowen

John K. Cowen, representative, was born at Millersburg, Holmes county, Ohio, Oct. 28, 1844. He was graduated from the College of New Jersey in 1866; studied in the law school of the University of Michigan, 1867-68; was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1868 and began the practice of his profession at Mansfield, Ohio. In February, 1872, he removed to Baltimore, Md., where he became general counsel for the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, and in 1896 was the receiver of the company. He was a Democratic representative from the 4th district of Maryland in the 54th congress, 1895-97.

The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows:

MILLERSBURG, a post-village, capital of Holmes county, Ohio, on Killbuck creek, 87 miles N. E. from Columbus. It is built on elevated ground and surrounded by hills. Laid out in 1824. It contains 4 churches, 4 newspaper offices, 1 foundry, and 1 grist mill. The Cleveland and Zanesville railroad passes through it.






Millersburg is situated 274 meters above sea level.
