Biographies:

Joseph William Mauck Biographical Sketch

Joseph William Mauck, educator, was born at Cheshire, Ohio, Aug. 17, 1852; son of Joseph and Adaline R. (Sigler) Mauck; grandson of Joseph and Elizabeth Mauck, and a descendant of Daniel Mauck, born in Pennsylvania, about 1725, who removed to Shanandoah county, Va., in 1751. He was graduated at Hillsdale college, Mich., A.B., 1875, A.M., 1877; was an undergraduate tutor in Greek and Latin at Hillsdale college, 1872-75; professor of Greek, 1876-80; a post-graduate student at Johns Hopkins university in 1881, and professor of Latin in Hillsdale college, 1881-83. He engaged in editorial work in Chicago, Ill., 1883-85, and in banking and insurance in Minneapolis, Minn., 1885-91; was acting editor and publisher of the Free Baptist, in Minneapolis, 1887; president of the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, 1891-97; superintendent of the South Dakota educational exhibit at the World's Columbian exposition, Chicago, Ill., in 1893, and a trustee of Hillsdale college, 1881-92, and again elected in 1900.
