Biographies:

Augustus Herman Pettibone - A Biography

Augustus Herman Pettibone, representative, was born at Bedford, Ohio, Jan. 21, 1835; son of Augustus N. and Nancy L. (Hathaway) Pettibone; grandson of Elijah Pettibone, a Revolutionary soldier of the Connecticut line, and Mary Field, his wife, and of Zephaniah and Silence (Alden) Hathaway, and a descendant of John Alden, clerk of the Mayflower, and of Mathew Grant, first American ancestor of Gen. U.S. Grant. He was educated at Hiram college, Ohio, was graduated at the University of Michigan in 1859, and studied law under the Hon. Jonathan E. Arnold at Milwaukee, Wis. He was admitted to the bar in 1861; settled in practice at La Crosse, Wis., and entered the Union army as a private in the 20th Wisconsin volunteers in 1861. He was promoted 2d lieutenant, captain and major and served until the close of the war, when he established his practice in Greeneville, Tenn. He was attorney-general for the 1st judicial circuit of Tennessee, 1870-82; a presidential elector on the Grant and Colfax ticket in 1868, and on the Hayes and Wheeler ticket in 1876, and assistant U.S. district attorney for the eastern district of Tennessee, 1873-80. He was a Republican representative from the first Tennessee district in the 47th, 48th and 49th congresses, 1881-87, resuming practice in Greene ville in 1887, and was a representative in the general assembly of Tennessee, 1896-97.
