Biographies:

Adna Lomanza Chaffee Biographical Sketch

Adna Lomanza Chaffee, soldier, was born at Orwell, Ohio, April 14, 1842. He was educated in the public schools, and in July, 1861, entered the 6th U.S. cavalry as a private. He was promoted 2nd lieutenant, May 12, 1863; 1st lieutenant, Feb. 22, 1865; captain, Oct. 12, 1869, and major in the 9th cavalry, July 7, 1888. He was breveted 1st lieutenant and captain for gallantry at Gettysburg and Dinwiddie Court-house, and major and lieutenant-colonel for gallantry in engagements with the Indians in Arizona and Texas. He was promoted lieutenant-colonel of the 3rd cavalry in June, 1897, and colonel of the 8th cavalry, May 8, 1899. He was appointed brigadier-general of volunteers, May 4, 1898; commanded a brigade in the Santiago campaign, June to August, 1898; the 2nd division of the 5th army corps, August to September, 1898; the 1st division of the 4th army corps, November to December, 1898, and was promoted major-general of volunteers in July, 1898. He served as chief of staff of the military division of Cuba, 1898-1900, was promoted brigadier-general U. S. Army, April 13, 1900, and commanded the U.S. forces sent to Peking, China, in June, 1900. He was promoted major-general in February, 1901, and was assigned to the department of the Philippines, in 1902 and to the department of the East in 1903, and in that year became the ranking officer of the army.
