He was graduated at Yale college in 1883, being awarded one of the Foote scholarships, and three years later was appointed instructor in medieval history, and lecturer on political science in that institution. In 1888 he was called to Adelbert college, Cleveland, Ohio, where, in 1890, he was made professor of history. In 1895 he wes chosen professor of history in Yale university, and in 1896 became one of the editors of The Yale Review. Among his writings are: "The Demarcation Line of Alexander VI.," and "Prince Henry the Navigator," in The Yale Review; "Seneca and the Discovery of America" in The Academy; "Alexander Hamilton and Adam Smith" in the Harvard Quarterly Journal of Economics; and "Leopold von Ranke" in The Sewanee Review. He published "The History of the Surplus Revenue of 1837" (1885). |
