Contact Us! 15% - 35% off all Products ยป The Ready Store Biographies:Biography of Alfred Hiller Alfred Hiller, educator, was born near Sharon Springs, N.Y., April 22, 1831; son of John Frederick and Margaret (Houck) Hiller; grandson of Frederick Hiller, and great grandson of John Frederick Hiller, who was killed in the battle of Oriskany, war of the Revolution. He attended Ames and Canajoharie academies, and in 1857 was graduated from Hartwick Theological seminary. He was pastor of Lutheran congregations at Fayette, N.Y., 1857-58; and at German Valley, N.Y., 1858-81. He resigned his pastorate in 1881 to accept the Dr. George B. Miller professorship of systematic theology and Old Testament exegesis in the theological department of Hartwick seminary, holding also the chair of mental and moral sciences in that institution. Wittenberg college conferred upon him the honorary degree of D.D. in 1882. |

Additional Local History Notes: The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows: SHARON SPRINGS, a post-village and watering-place of Schoharie county, New York, about 50 miles W. from Albany. Here are springs impregnated with sulphur, and a large hotel called the Pavilion House. The scenery in the vicinity is very interesting. Sharon Springs is situated 336 meters above sea level. |
