Biography of Edward Payson Crane

Edward Payson Crane, educator, was born in Jefferson, N.Y., March 6, 1832; son of Daniel and Elsie Ann (Demarest) Crane; grandson of Daniel Crane and of Henry Oothant Demarest; and a deecendant of Maj.-Gen. Humphrey Atherton of the colonial army; Capt. Lemuel Hotchkiss; the Rev. Richard Mather; of the Van Oothants, Dutch patroons, large landed proprietors on the Hudson; and of the Demarests, of Puritan and Huguenot origin. He was graduated at the University of the city of New York in 1851 as English salutatorian, and from the Union theological seminary in 1855. He was ordained to the Presbyterian ministry and was pastor at Rockland Lake, N.Y., 1855-57; at St. Augustine, Fla., 1857-59; at Palatka, Fla., 1859-61; and missionary in various parts of Florida, 1861-65. He was professor of Latin, of logic and of rhetoric in the Western university of Pennsylvania, 1865-82, when his health obliged him to resign. He afterward preached at California, Pa., 1884-85; was U.S. consul at Stuttgart, Germany, 1887-90, and at Hanover, 1893-97. The University of the city of New York conferred on him the degree of A.M. in 1854.
