Biographies:

Biographical Sketch of Philander Deming

Philander Deming, author, was born in Carlisle, N.Y., Feb. 6, 1829; son of the Rev. Rufus Romeo and Julia Ann (Porter) Deming; grandson of Davis and Elizabeth (Curtis) Deming and of Dr. Norton and Sarah (Cobb) Porter; and a descendant of Thomas Deming of Weathersfield, Conn. (1635). He was fitted for college at Whitestown seminary, and was graduated at the University of Vermont in 1861. He engaged in legislative reporting and in correspondence for the newspapers, 1861-66, and made stenographic reports of trials at the circuits of the supreme court of the state of New York, 1866-82. In 1872 he was graduated from the Albany law school and admitted to the bar. In 1879 he was chosen president of the New York state law stenographers' association. In 1873 he began to write sketches and stories of Adirondack life, and scenes in the courts, published principally in the Atlantic Monthly. He is also the author of: Adirondack Stories (1880); and Tompkins and Other Folks (1885).
