His grandparents were natives of Holland and settled in Orange county, N.Y. He was a representative in the first four provincial congresses of the colony of New York and a delegate to the Continental congresses of 1774-75 and of 1785-87. He was elected a member of the New York assembly of 1776, which assembly never organized. He was a justice of the county sessions, 1778-88; state senator 1781-90; a minority member of the state convention that ratified the Federal constitution; and a commissioner from New York to settle with Massachusetts the claim for the western of main claimed by New York, through royal grant, through purchase from the Indians, and through the British treaty. The state voted, April 19, 1780, to transfer it to the Federal union and it became the vast northwest territory. He died in Blauveltville, N.Y., April 1, 1809. |
