Egbert Benson Brown, soldier, was born at Brownsville, N. Y., Oct. 24, 1816. He was thrown upon his own resources at an early age, and having acquired the rudiments of an education at Tecumseh, Mich., he was employed first as helper on a whaling voyage around the world, and afterwards in various occupations in Toledo, Ohio, where, in 1849, he was chosen mayor of the city. In 1852 he removed to St. Louis, Mo., and became a railroad manager, resigning his position in 1861 to organize a regiment of infantry. He rendered effective service in saving the state from secession, and in May, 1862, was appointed brigadier-general of Missouri volunteers, becoming brigadier-general of United States volunteers in 1863, after the battle of Springfield, Mo., in which he was severely wounded. The troops under his command were officially complimented by the Missouri legislature for their gallantry at Springfield. He never recovered from the effects of his wounds, served for a time as pension agent at St. Louis, and in 1869 engaged in farming at Hastings, Ill. He was a member of the Illinois board of equalization from 188l to 1884.
