He was graduated at Wesleyan university in 1839, and was licensed to preach by the conference of the M.E. church. He was a teacher in Newbury seminary, Vermont, 1839-42, and principal of that institution, 1844-46; principal of Wesleyan seminary, Albion, Mich., 1846-53; and one of the founders and the first president of Northwestern university, Evanston, Ill., 1853-54. He was married in 1841 to Martha A. Morse, who died Feb. 1, 1858. Ohio Wesleyan conferred upon him the degree of D.D. in 1851. He died in Troy, N.Y., Oct. 21, 1854. |
