Biographies:

David Murray Biography

David Murray, educator and author, was born in Bovina, N.Y., Oct. 15, 1830; son of William and Jean (Black) Murray. His parents immigrated to America from Scotland in 1818. He was graduated at Union college, Schenectady, N.Y., 1852; was a tutor in Albany academy and professor of mathematics there in 1852-57, and principal, 1857-63. He was professor of mathematics and astronomy in Rutgers college, 1863-73, and was married, Dec. 23, 1867, to Martha Neilson of New York city. In 1873 he went to Japan as adviser to the imperial minister of education. He was superintendent of education in Tokyo, 1873-79, and aided in the establishment of the public school system of Japan. He laid the facts in regard to the Japanese indemnity before the 44th congress in 1875-76, which resulted in its return. He visited the Centennial exposition of 1876 in the interests of Japan, and made a collection for its museums. He was secretary of the regents of the University of the State of New York, 1880-89; a lecturer on the history of education in Japan at Johns Hopkins university in 1897, and in 1889 took up his residence in New Brunswick, N.J. He received the degree of Ph.D. from the University of the State of New York in 1863; LL.D. from Rutgers college in 1873, and from Union college in 1874, and the decoration of the Rising Sun from the Japanese emperor in 1878. He is the author of: a Manual of Land-Surveying (1869); Story of Japan (1894); Anti-rent Episode in New York (1896); History of Education in New Jersey (1899), and various pamphlets. He edited Japanese Education (1876); prepared and edited the Centennial History of Delaware County, N.Y., (1898).
