Biographies:

A Biography of Charles Emerson Beecher

Charles Emerson Beecher, educator, was born in Dunkirk, N.Y., Oct. 9, 1856; son of Moses and Emily (Downer) Beecher; grandson of Moses and Lydia (Dawson) Beecher; and of Andrew Otis and Ester (Emerson) Downer; and a descendant of Zacceus and Mary (Brigham) Downer, and of Richard and Mary (Gorton) Emerson. He was graduated from the University of Michigan, B.S. in 1878; was in the New York state museum at Albany, N.Y., 1878-'88; and was a post-graduate of Yale, receiving the degree of Ph.D. in 1889. He was assistant instructor in pal?ontology at Yale, 1888-'91; instructor, 1891-'92; assistant professor 1892-'97; and professor of historical geology there from 1897. He had charge of invertebrate pal?ontology in Yale university museum; and was elected university professor of historical geology, a member of the governing board of the Sheffield scientific school; a trustee of the Peabody museum, and curator of the geological collections. He was married, Sept. 12, 1894, to Mary Salome Galligan of Warren, Pa.

William Lewis Carpenter - A Biography

William Lewis Carpenter, soldier, was born in Dunkirk, N. Y,, Jan. 13, 1844, son of William Lewis, and Frances (Bristol) Carpenter, and direct descendant from William Carpenter, who landed at Plymouth, Mass. from the ship Bevis in 1638. In 1861 he joined the U. S. navy as acting midshipman, serving as such until May, 1864, when he enlisted in the U. S. artillery. He was promoted 2nd lieutenant, 9th U. S. infantry, April 5, 1867, and lst lieutenant, Dec. 31, 1873. In 1873 he was made naturalist of the U. S. geographical survey and in 1875 was transferred to the U. S. geological survey. He was made fellow of the American association for the advancement of science in 1877, and was a member of the loyal legion and of the Sons of the American Revolution. On Oct. 2, 1887, he was promoted captain. He died at Madison Barracks, N. Y., July 10, 1898.
