Biographies:

A Biography of William Wallace Brown

William Wallace Brown, representative, was born at Summer Hill, N.Y., April, 22, 1836; son of Rasselas Wilcox and Mary (Brownell) Brown. He was graduated at Alfred university in 1861; served during the Civil war, in the New York volunteers and Pennsylvania rifles, 1861-'65, and was admitted to the Pennsylvania bar in 1866. He became district attorney of McKean county, Pa., in 1867; served as a representative in the state legislature, 1872-'76, and as a Republican representative in the 48th and 49th congresses, 1883-'87, He received the degree LL.D. from Alfred university in 1886. He was auditor of the U.S. war department, 1897-'99, and of the U.S. navy department from 1899.

Biographical Sketch of Elbridge Gerry Spaulding

Elbridge Gerry Spaulding, representative, was born at Summer Hill, N.Y., Feb. 24, 1809; son of Edward Spaulding, and a descendant of Edward Spaulding the immigrant, 1630. He studied law in Batavia and Attica, N.Y.; and practised in Genesee county, and in Buffalo, N.Y. He was city clerk of Buffalo in 1836; mayor of the city in 1837, and a representative in the state legislature, and practised with great success until 1850, when he engaged in the banking business. He was president of the reorganized Farmers' and Mechanics' national bank; was state treasurer, 1853, and a Whig representative in the 31st, 36th and 37th congresses, 1849?51 and 1859?63, and as chairman of sub-committee charged with the preparation of financial measures, he drafted the legal tender and national currency bank acts, securing their adoption as war measures. He is the author of: History of the Legal Tender Paper Money used During the Great Rebellion (1869). He died in Buffalo, N.Y., May 5, 1897.

SUMMER HILL, a post-township forming the S. E. extremity of Cayuga co., New York. It is said that Ex-President Fillmore was born in this township. Population, 1251.
