Biographical Sketch of Frank Gay Clarke

Frank Gay Clarke, representative. was born in Wilton, N. H., Sept. 10, 1850; son of Moses and Julia L. (Gay) Clark, and a descendant of Samuel Clark. He was prepared for college at the Kimball union academy, Meriden, N. H., and entered Dartmouth, but was not graduated in course, receiving a degree of B.S. in 1898. He was admitted to the bar in 1876 and practised in Peterborough, N. H. He was a representative in the state legislature in 1885 and 1891; speaker of that body in the latter year, and a state senator in 1889. He served on the staff of Governor Hale, 1885-87. He was a Republican representative in the 55th and 56th congresses, 1897-1901. He died in Peterborough, N. H., Jan. 9, 1901.

A Short Biography of Abiel Abbot Livermore

Abiel Abbot Livermore, clergyman and author, was born in Wilton, N.H., Oct. 30, 1811; son of Jonathan and Abigail (Abbot) Livermore; grandson of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Kidder) Livermore and of Maj. Abiel Abbot; and a descendant of John Livermore, of Little Hurloe, Suffolk, England, a potter by trade, who sailed from Ipswich, England, to America in 1684 and settled in Watertown, Mass., in 1642. He prepared for college at Phillips' Exeter academy, N.H.; was graduated from Harvard, A.B., 18333 B.D., 1836, and was ordained to the Unitarian ministry, Nov. 2, 1836. He was pastor at Keene, N.H., 1836-50, and at Cincinnati, Ohio, 1850-57. He removed to Yonkers, N.Y., in 1857, where he was editor of the Christian Enquirer published in New York city and pastor of Hope church, 1857-63. He was president of the Meadville Theological school, 1863-90. He was twice married; first, May 17, 1888, to Elizabeth D. Abbot, of Windham, who died Sept. 13, 1879; and secondly, June 18, 1883, to Mrs. Mary A. (Kenting) Moore. He received from Harvard the degree of A.M. in 1872 and that of S.T.D. in 1888. He edited Priestley's Corruptions of Christianity (1838); and with others, Christian Hymns (1845); and is the author of: A Commentary on the New Testament (6 vols. 1842-81); Lectures to Young Men (1846); The Marriage Offering, prose and poetry (1848); The War with Mexico Reviewed, a prize essay (1850); Discourses (1859); Anti-Tobacco (1833); The History of Wilton (1888), and contributions to periodicals. He died in Wilton, N.H., Nov. 28. 1892.
