Biographies:

Robert Martin Douglas Biographical Sketch

Robert Martin Douglas, jurist, was born in Rockingham county, N.C., Jan. 28, 1849; son of the Hon. Stephen Arnold and Martha (Martin) Douglas. He was graduated at Georgetown university, Washington, D.C., in 1867, receiving his A.M. degree in 1870. He was secretary to Governor Holden, 1868, private secretary to President Grant, 1869-73, and U.S. marshal for the western district of North Carolina, 1873-83. He was admitted to the bar in 1885 and practised in Greensboro, N.C., serving for six years as master in chancery for the U.S. circuit court. His address delivered before the Columbian Catholic congress, Chicago, Ill., in September, 1893, on "Trade Combinations and Strikes," was printed and widely distributed. He was elected associate justice of the supreme court of North Carolina in 1896 for a term of eight years. He was married in 1874 to Jessie, daughter of the Hon. Robert P. Dick, U.S. judge for the western district of North Carolina. He received the degree of LL.D. from Georgetown university in 1897.
