Biographies:

Biography of Alfred Dockery

Alfred Dockery, representative, was born in Richmond county, N.C., Dec. 1l, 1797. He was a representative in the state house of commons in 1822; a member of the constitutional convention in 1835; a state senator in 1836, and a representative in the 29th and 32d congresses, 1845-47 and 1851-53. In 1864 and 1866 he was unsuccessful candidate for governor of North Carolina, and in 1865 was a member of the convention called by the provisional government of the state. He died at Dockery's Store, N.C., Dec. 3, 1873.

The Biography of Oliver Hart Dockery

Oliver Hart Dockery, representative, was born in Richmond county, N.C., Aug. 12, 1830; son of the Hon. Alfred Dockery. He was graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1848, and studied law, but became a planter. He was elected to the state legislature in 1858 and 1859, and was a presidential elector in 1860. In 1861 he entered the Confederate service, and became a lieutenant-colonel. He was a representative in the 40th and 41st congresses, 1867-71, and U.S. consul general at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, S.A., 1889-93.

A Short Biography of Luther McKinnon

Luther McKinnon, educator, was born in Richmond county, N.C., Oct. 31, 1840; son of Daniel and Margaret (McKay) McKinnon; grandson of Murdock and Sarah McKinnon and of Archibald and Margaret McKay. He was graduated at Davidson college, salutatorian, 1861, and studied at Columbia Theological seminary, 1861-62; was licensed by the presbytery of Fayetteville, 1863, was chaplain in the Confederate army, 1864-65; and principal of Floral college, N.C., 1866-67. He was ordained evangelist in 1866; was pester at Goldsboro, N.C., 1867-71; at Concord, N.C., 1871-83; and of the First Presbyterian church, Columbia, S.C., 1883-85. He was president of Davidson college and professor of ethics, Christian evidence and Bible studies. 1885-88, and retired in 1888 on account of ill health. He received the honorary degree of D.D. from the University of North Carolina, and from the Southwestern Presbyterian university, Clarkeville, Tenn., in 1886.
