Biographies:

Biographical Sketch of John Henry Boner

John Henry Boner, editor and poet, was born in Salem, N.C., Jan, 31, 1845, son of Thomas and Phoebe (Nading) Boner; and grandson of Isaac and Dorothea (Elrod) Boner, and of John and Hannah Nading. He received an academic education and private instruction and subsequently learned the printer's trade. In 1867 he edited the Salem Observer and the Asheville Pioneer, North Carolina, was assistant secretary to the state constitutional convention of 1868 and chief clerk of the North Carolina house of representatives, 1869-'70. He was employed in the civil service at Washington, D.C., 1871-'87, and then removed to New York, where he became a member of the staffs of the "Century Dictionary" and of the "Library of American Literature." He was literary editor of the New York World, 1891-'92, which post he resigned to join the editorial staff of the "Standard Dictionary." He edited the Literary Digest, 1894-'95, and was on the editorial staff of Appleton's "Annual Cyclop?dia" from 1896. He subsequently entered the employ of the Government printing office at Washington, D.C. He was married in 1870 to Lottie Smith of Raleigh, N.C. He was elected a member of the Authors club and is the author of "Whispering Pines" (poems, 1883), and contributions to the magazines. He died in 1903.
