A Biography of John J. McRae

John J. McRae, senator, was born in Wayne county, Miss., probably in 1810. He was educated as a lawyer, served in both houses of the state legislature and was speaker for two sessions. In 1851, on the resignation of U.S. Senator Jefferson Davis to become candidate for governor, he was appointed to fill out the term expiring March 3, 1852. He was governor of Mississippi, 1854-58, Democratic representative in the 35th congress, to fill out the unexpired term of John A. Quitman, who died in July, 1858, and in the 36th congress, serving 1858-61. He resigned, Jan. 12, 1861, to take part in organizing a Confederate government. He served as a representative in the Confederate States congress, from February, 1862, to February, 1864. He emigrated to British Honduras in 1865, where he remained until his death at Balize, May 30, 1868.
