Local History Notes:

Battle at Austin MS 24 May 1863

Austin, Miss., May 24, 1863. Mississippi Marine Brigade. On the evening of the 23d as Brig.-Gen. Ellet, with his command, the marine brigade, was being taken down the Mississippi from Memphis, his commissary and quartermaster boat was fired upon about 6 Miles above Austin, from the Mississippi Side of the river, by Confederates with 2 pieces of artillery. Next morning he returned to Austin and landed his force. The enemy a few hours before had captured and burned a small trading steamer, appropriating its freight and taking its crew prisoners. Ellet's cavalry, 200 strong, under command of Maj. Hubbard, when 8 Miles from Austin overtook 1,000 mounted Confederates under command of Col. Slemons, and a 2 hours' engagement ensued. From the shelter of A Bottom Hubbard repulsed the enemy. Federal loss, 2 killed, 19 wounded; Confederate, 5 killed several wounded. Hubbard Took 22 stands of arms and at Augusta destroyed hidden arms by burning the town.
