Biographies:

A Short Biography of Maurice Francis Burke

Maurice Francis Burke, R. C. bishop, was born in Ireland, May 5, 1845. He came to the United States with his parents in 1849, settling in Chicago, Ill. He was educated at St. Mary's of the Lake, Chicago, Ill., and at Notre Dame university, Ind., and was a student in the American college at Rome, Italy, 1866-75. He was ordained May 22, 1875, at Rome, Italy, by Cardinal Patrizzi. He was all assistant priest at St. Mary 's church, Chicago, Ill., 1875-78, and pastor of St. Mary's church, Joliet, Ill., 1878-87. He was consecrated bishop of Cheyenne, Wyoming, in the Cathedral of the Holy Name, Chicago, Ill., Oct. 28, 1887, by Archbishop Feehan, assisted by Bishop McClosky of Louisville, Ky., and Bishop Cosgrove of Davenport, Iowa, and was transferred to the see of St. Joseph, Mo., June 19, 1893.
