Contact Us! 15% - 35% off all Products ยป The Ready Store Biographies:Mark Hill Dunnell Biographical Sketch Mark Hill Dunnell, representative, was born at Buxton, Maine, July 2, 1823; son of Samuel and Achsah (Hill) Dunnell; grandson of Joseph Dunnell, and of Nathaniel Hill, a soldier in the Revolutionary war, and a descendant of Benjamin Dunnell. He was graduated from Colby university in 1849, was principal of the Norway and Hebron academies, and in 1854 was elected a representative in the Maine legislature. In 1855 he was a member of the state senate. He began the practice of law in Portland, Maine, in 1860, and in 1861 entered the Union volunteer army as colonel of the 5th Maine regiment of infantry. He was U.S. consul at Vera Cruz, Mexico, in 1862. He settled in Owatonna, Minn., 1865, and in 1867 was a representative in the state legislature, and state superintendent of public instruction, 1867-70. He was a representative in the 42d, 43d, 44th, 45th, 46th and 47th congresses, 1871-85, and in the 51st congress, 1889-91, in which last he was chairman of the committee on the census. In 1873 he was made an honorary member of the Geographical and statistical society of Mexico. He received the honorary degree of LL. D. from Shurtleff college, Upper Alton, Ill., in 1868, and from Colby university in 1899. |

Additional Local History Notes: The 1854 Gazetteer of the United States by Thomas Baldwin shows: BUXTON, a post-township of York county, Maine, on the W. side of Saco river, about 60 miles S. W. by S. from Augusta, has abundant water-power. Population, 2995. Buxton is situated 56 meters above sea level. |
