Contact Us! 15% - 35% off all Products ยป The Ready Store Biographies:Biographical Sketch of Stephen Alfred Jones Stephen Alfred Jones, educator, was born at China, Maine, March 21, 1848; son of Alfred H. and Mary (Randall) Jones; grandson of Stephen Jones and a descendant of John Jones, of Wales, who settled on the island of Nantucket, Mass., in 1650. He was fitted for college at Friends school, Providence, R.I., and the Waterville, Maine, Classical institute and was graduated from Dartmouth, A.B., 1872, A.M., 1875. He began to teach at the age of sixteen and at his graduation had already taught nine terms of school in various New England villages. He was tutor in languages and mathematics in Spiceland academy, Indiana, 1872-74; and was professor of Greek and Latin in Penn college, Oscaloosa, Iowa, 1874-82. In June, 1882, he resigned and visited Europe, spending three years in the study of classical philology, the last two years at the University of Bonn, Germany. He was president of the Nevada State university, Reno, 1890-99, and in the latter year removed to San Jose, Cal. In 1885 he received the degree of Ph.D., pro meritis, from Dartmouth college. Alfred Owen Biography Alfred Owen, educator, was born in China, Maine, July 20, 1829; son of Sewell and Jane (Maxfield) Owen. He was graduated at Waterville college, A.B., 1853, A.M., 1856; was a principal of the academy at Bridgton, Maine, 1854-56, and was graduated at the Newton Theological institution in 1858. He was married, March 4, 1858, to Elizabeth C. Stark of Waterville, Maine. He was ordained at China, Maine, Feb. 9, 1858; was pastor at Lynn, Mass., 1858-67; at Detroit, Mich., 1867-77, and at Chicago, Ill., 1877-79. He was president of Denison university, Granville, Ohio, 1879-86, and during his administration all debts were paid; the endowment was increased by $100,000; the publication of the Bulletin of the Scientific Laboratories of the University begun, and the admittance of the university to the Ohio branch of the Inter-State Oratorical association secured. He was president and professor of theology at Roger Williams university, Nashville, Tenn., 1887-95, resigning the presidency in 1895, but continuing to hold the chair of theology and metaphysics. He received the honorary degree D.D. from Kalamazoo college, Michigan, in 1871. He was a frequent contributor to reviews and to the denominational press, and an occasional lecturer at several theological seminaries and ministers' institutes. |
