Contact Us! 15% - 35% off all Products ยป The Ready Store Biographies:The Biography of Phinehas Barnes Phinehas Barnes, politician, was born at Orland, Me., Jan. 11, 1811. He was prepared for college at Phillips academy, Andover, Mass., and was graduated from Bowdoin college in 1830. He was clerk in a bookstore; edited a paper in Bangor, and from 1834 to 1839 occupied the chair of Greek and Latin at Waterville college. He then studied law; was admitted to practice and established a large business in Portland, being solicitor of the Grand Trunk railroad, and trustee of the Atlantic and St. Lawrence railroad. He filled numerous offices of trust and responsibility, acting as a trustee of the Maine general hospital, and of the state agricultural college, an overseer of Bowdoin college, a director of the Portland savings bank, and for several years editor of the Advertiser. In 1860 he was nominated by the Whigs on the Constitutional Union ticket for governor of Maine, but was not elected. He died in Portland, Me., Aug. 21, 1871. |

Pop., 1580. Orland is situated 60 meters above sea level. |
