The Biography of John McCaffrey

John McCaffrey, educator, was born in Emmitsburg, Md., Sept. 6, 1806. He attended the Theological Seminary of St. Sulpice and St. Mary's university in Baltimore, Md., and was ordained priest in 1838. He was elected president of Mount St. Mary's college in 1838 and began the erection of a church there, besides introducing many improvements to the college buildings and grounds. He was twice offered a bishopric, but declined. He delivered a course of literary and philosophical lectures before the Philomathean society of the college and subsequently before the Catholic association of Baltimore, which attracted much attention and were published.
