Contact Us! 15% - 35% off all Products ยป The Ready Store Biographies:Biography of Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer, delegate, was born in Charles county, Md., in 1723; son of Dr. Daniel and?(Hanson) Jenifer; grandson of Samuel and Elizabeth Hanson, and great grandson of Andrew and Annika Hanson, of Sweden, who settled on Kent Island, Md., in 1653. Andrew died there in 1655, and his widow married Andrew Hellena. Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer was a delegate front Maryland to the Continental congress, 1778-82; a member of the convention that framed the Federal constitution, and a signer of the instrument, Sept. 17, 1778. He never married, but his brother, Daniel Jenifer (born 1727, died 1795), married Elizabeth Hanson, who died in 1757, and had a son, Dr. Daniel, who married Sarah, daughter of Dr. James and Mariamne Craik, and who had two sons: Daniel of St. Thomas, who died unmarried; and the Hon. Daniel, representative . The first Daniel of St. Thomas, the delegate, died in Charles county, Md., Nov. 6, 1790. William Matthews Merrick Biographical Sketch William Matthews Merrick, jurist, was born in Charles county, Md., Sept 1, 1818; son of William Duhurst and Catherine (Romes) Merrick. He was graduated at the University of Georgetown, D.C., in 1831, studied law in the University of Virginia, and was admitted to the Baltimore bar in 1839. He settled in practice in Frederick in 1844, was deputy attorney-general for Frederick county, 1845-50, and removed to Washington, D.C., in 1854. He was associate judge of the U.S. circuit court for the District of Columbia from 1854 until 1863, when the court was abolished. He then resumed practice in Maryland; was senior professor of law in Columbian university at Georgetown, D.C., 1866-67, and was a delegate to the Maryland constitutional convention in 1867, and a Democratic representative in the Maryland legislature in 1870. He was a representative from the fifth Maryland district in the 42d congress, 1871-73, and was the defeated candidate for the 43d congress in 1872. In congress he opposed the act known as the "salary grab," and when it passed refused to accept his back pay. He was associate judge of the supreme court of the DiStrict of Columbia, 1885-89, and also served as professor of law in Georgetown university. He received the degree LL. D. from Georgetown university in 1875. He married a daughter of the Hon. C. A. Wickliffe. He died in Washington, D.C., Feb. 4, 1889. Local History and Genealogy Links: |
