Henry Sheffie Geyer Biography

Henry Sheffie Geyer, senator, was born in Fredericktown, Md., Dec. 9, 1790. He was admitted to the Maryland bar in 1811 and practised in Fredericktown till May 2, 1813, when he became 1st lieutenant in the 38th regiment of infantry. From December, 1813, to June, 1815, he served as regimental paymaster. In 1815, after being mustered out of the army, he removed to St. Louis, Mo., and became a member of the territorial legislature in 1818. In 1820 he was a delegate to the constitutional convention of Missouri and was a member of the general assembly of the state, 1821-25, being speaker of that body, 1821-23. He assisted in revising the statutes of the state in 1825, and contributed to the adoption of a code. In 1850 he declined the portfolio of war offered him by President Fillmore; and he was elected to the U.S. senate, serving, 1851-57. In 1856 he was one of the counsel of the Dred Scott case. He published Statutes of Missouri (1817). He died in St. Louis, Mo., March 5, 1859.

Roger Nelson Biographical Sketch

Roger Nelson, soldier, was born in Fredericktown, Md., in 1735; son of John Nelson. He entered the Continental army and was commissioned 2d lieutenant of the 5th Maryland regiment in 1779. He was promoted 1st lieutenant, July 15, 1780, was seriously wounded and left for dead, and made a prisoner at the battle of Camden, S.C., Aug. 16, 1780. He was exchanged in December, 1789, and transferred to Baylor's regiment of Continental dragoons, Nov. 9, 1782, where he served till the close of the war. After the war he became prominent as a lawyer; was elected a representative from Maryland in the 8th congress to take the place of Daniel Hiester, deceased, and was re-elected to the 9th, 10th, and 11th congresses, serving from Nov. 5, 1804, till May 14, 1810, when he resigned to accept the appointment of associate justice of the 5th judicial circuit of Maryland. He died in Fredericktown, Md., June 7, 1815.
