He learned the carriage-maker's trade, and then became a manufacturer of tinware. In 1853 he went to San Francisco, where he amassed a fortune in real estate, and in 1880 he removed to Worcester, Mass. In 1887 he endowed Clark University, at Worcester, with $2,000,000. He also presented a fine public library to his native town. He died in Worcester, Mass., May 23, 1900. |
