In 1808 he was graduated at Harvard, then studied medicine, being graduated from the medical department of the university of Pennsylvania in 1812, and began to practise in his native town, where he remained during his life. He wrote "Historical Sketch of the Massachusetts Medical Society" (1838); "Memoirs of Mrs. M. A. O. Clark" (1844); and when he was nearly eighty years of age the "Alden Memorial." This book traces the line of ancestors of the American descendants of John Alden, the author being a direct descendant in the seventh generation. Dr. Alden was the last survivor of the Harvard class of 1808. He died Jan. 26, 1881. Edmund K. Alden Biographical Sketch Edmund K. Alden, clergyman, was born at Randolph, Mass., April 11, 1825, son of Ebenezer Alden, physician, who was of the seventh generation from John Alden of the Mayflower. The son was fitted for college at Randolph academy, and was graduated at Amherst in the class of 1844. He taught in Williston seminary the following year; and then entered the Andover theological seminary, and was graduated in 1848. He became an Abbott resident, and preached in various places in New England until he became pastor of the Phillips Church in 1859. He was a member of the prudential committee of the American board of foreign missions from 1869 to 1876, when he became secretary of the home department of the board. In addition to his office of secretary of the American board he held the office of trustee of Amherst college, and a similar office in relation to the theological seminary at Andover. He died in Boston, April 30, 1896. Biography of Charles White Charles White, educator, was born in Randolph, Mass., Dec. 28, 1795; son of Solomon and Rhode (Braman) White; grandson of Capt. John and Ruth (Thayer) White and of David and Dorothy (Blanchard) Thayer, and a descendant of Thomas White, who was admitted a freeman of Massachusetts colony, March 8, 1635-36. He was graduated from Dartmouth college, A.B., 1821, A.M., 1824, and was a student at Andover Theological seminary, 1821-23. He was ordained to the Presbyterian ministry, Jan. 5, 1825; was pastor at Thetford, Vt., 1825-29; at Cazenovia, N.Y., 1829-83; at Owego, N.Y., 1834-41, and president of Wabash college, Crawfordsville, Ind., 1841-61. The honorary degree of D.D. was conferred upon him by Union college in 1841. He is the author of: Essays in Literature and Ethics (1853). He died in Crawfordsville, Ind., Oct. 29, 1861. |
